Matt. 8:5-13 A Man Who was Honored by His Enemies
Introduction “We should prevail over Japan whatsoever,” most Koreans think. Our parents brainwashed us into thinking it. We Koreans have bitter feelings against the Japanese because they invaded Korea and ruled Koreans harshly for 36 years. However, there were a few good Japanese who were honored by Koreans. Mastomi Yasjaemon was one of them. On December 15, 1995 his daughter Isie received the Magnolia medal on behalf of him from the Korean president Youngsam Kim. The medal is given to one who has performed a prominently meritorious deed in political, economic, social and educational fields. In the time Japan invaded Korea most Japanese exploited Koreans for their profits. But Elder Mastomi, a faithful Christian, was different. He built schools for Koreans and reclaimed the land by drainage while he stayed in Korea from 1910 to 1925. During that time Koreans hated the Japanese but liked Mr. Mastomi. Mr. Oksung Kim, who had graduated from Kochang High School which Mr. Mastomi built, said “Mr. Mastomi, though he was Japanese, loved Korea and Koreans. He was ashamed of the invasion of Japan and he practiced the love of Jesus on us and planted in us the hope of independence through Christianity and education.” Though he was an enemy against Korea, he was honored by Koreans. Today's scriptures also speak about a Roman soldier who was deemed an enemy to the Jews but honored by them. According to Luke the Jews came to Jesus and pleaded with him to heal the servant of the centurion for he was deserving. On the other hand the centurion humbly said that he did not deserve to have the grace of God. Seeing this relationship between them Jesus was very happy and granted their request. Through this story we could also be inspired to have such a beautiful relationship with one another. Main One day, some elders of the Jews came to Jesus and asked Him to heal the servant of a centurion, for he had loved their people and had built the Jews a synagogue. It was an odd thing for the invaded to plead for the invader. The invaded usually hate the invaders. The centurion was one of the leaders of the invaders. The invaders extracted taxes from them, whipped them, put them to jail and bugged them. They ordered the Jews to worship Caesar in front of the statues of Caesar in their "sacred" sanctuary. Many soldiers raped Jewish women. How could the Jews not hate the invaders? However the Jews came to Jesus and pleaded for one of the invaders. It was beautiful to see them. How could the Jews plead for an enemy? They said to Jesus, “This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” The elders came to Jesus and earnestly pleaded with him to grant mercy on the centurion who was considered as an invader. What an impressive scene it was! It moved Jesus. How could it be possible? I. First, they pleaded to Jesus to heal the centurion's servant, because the centurion valued people. In Jesus' time, Rome ruled most of the nations. There were many servants in a Roman soldier’s house. Roman soldiers could even kill a servant if they wanted to. Servants were no more than properties. There was no sympathy for servants. The servants had to do whatever their master ordered them to do. Their lives were no better than those of the flies. However, the centurion was different. He valued his servant highly and tried to cure him with all efforts. He asked the elders of Jews to plead with Jesus to heal his servant. He knew the value of a man. He sympathized with even servants. He put priority not on work but on man. Most Roman soldiers did not consider the conquered as valuable, but exploited them. He was not a ruthless soldier but was kind and helpful to the conquered. He treated a “valueless servant” like a priceless gem stone. He impressed the Jews very much. We should know the value of a person. There are too many people on the streets. The world is covered with people. You can find people in the desert or in the deep mountains. Because people are so plentiful, we forget their value. Jesus said, "a life is more precious than the whole world." If you understand that the people you meet every day are more precious than a thousand dollars (money), your attitude towards them will be much different. People are much more important than work. We should rather lose opportunities than lose people. Opportunities will come again, but the people you lose won’t come again. If you value people, you shall be honored even by the enemies. II. Secondly, they pleaded with Jesus to heal the centurion's servant, because the centurion worked not for himself alone. While the centurion was living in Judea for three years, he lived together with the Jews. He was not going to stay there for a long time. As a soldier, he would have been deployed there for only two or three years. Then he would be deployed to another place. He had no reason to have a deep relationship with the people there. Many soldiers exploited the natives for themselves and bribed them or overcharged them. They were there to earn money, not to help them. They were harder on the Jews in order to earn more money. For their promotion, they would have to press into people. However, the centurion was different. He "loved them and built a synagogue for them." How could they hate the centurion who did good for them and loved the Jews and Israel? The centurion did not defy the religion of the conquered. Though people hated him, he changed their hearts with love like Jesus. He built a synagogue for them. Do you think the centurion was rich enough to have built a synagogue for the people with ease? I don't think so. His love for them made him build a synagogue for them. He was only a minor officer who led 80-100 soldiers. A century had ten contubemium which consisted of 8-10 soldiers each. Five centuries (480-500 soldiers) made a cohort and the leader of two cohorts was called kiliarkos, which means the head of 1000 soldiers. Fourteen cohorts made a legion, which consisted of about 7000 soldiers. He was a centurion, that is, a first lieutenant. His salary was not that much either. If so, it would not have been easy to build a house for people whom he has nothing to do with willingly. He might have had a wife and children in Rome. He should have saved his spare money for them. However, he didn't live only for himself. Wherever he was deployed, he shared his life with the people there. Live with the people friendly. Live along together. The Jews were touched by his deeds. III. Thirdly, the Jews willingly wanted to help the centurion, because the centurion was humble and considerate to others. The elders of the Jews came to Jesus and said, "He is worthy for You to grant this to him." The rulers usually disparaged the culture of the ruled because the rulers think their civilization is much superior to that of the ruled. They had no interest in the food or culture of the ruled. However, the centurion was different. He honored the culture of the ruled even though it was irrational. The Jews took absurd pride on their culture. They neither visited the house of the Gentiles nor let the Gentiles enter their house, which was considered defilement to them. The Jews considered the Romans "dogs." The Romans also despised such Jews. However, the centurion knew the Jewish culture and honored it. So, when Jesus was going to enter the centurion's house, the centurion said, "Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not worthy for You to come under my roof; for this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You. But [just] say the word, and my servant will be healed." He considered Jesus so that Jesus might not be called "a Law breaker." The Jews considered the centurion 'worthy,' but he considered himself 'not worthy.' This relationship looks beautiful. If the elders, on the contrary, considered him 'not worthy,' but the centurion himself felt 'worthy,' it may have looked ugly. He was humble. As a Roman, he must have had pride in his nationality, but he did not disregard the uncivilized Jews. Though he came from a civilized country, he did not ignore Jewish culture and religion. So, he praised him saying, “I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.” Jesus accepted his considerate heart. Humble and considerate hearts make dry and hard hearts soft. Conclusion One day, some elders of the Jews came to Jesus and said, "This man (centurion) deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue." They wanted to repay his love by asking Jesus to grant his request. On the other hand, the centurion said, "I am not worthy for You to come under my roof; for this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You." The Jews hated the Roman soldiers. However, the centurion was different: he valued the people; he worked not for himself alone, but for the people; and he was humble and considerate. Though Jesus had never met him, he granted his wish because of his faith and humbleness. They considered each other, which made world beautiful. It touched Jesus and he granted their request. Like the centurion let us move our Lord Jesus by valuing others more than ourselves, by considering others first, and by humbling ourselves but praising others. God bless you. 마8:5-13 적에게 존경받는 사람 2025-3-16 (서론) “어쨋든 일본은 이겨야 한다”는 것이 우리 한국 사람의 생각입니다. 이것은 역사적으로 우리나라가 36년 동안 일본의 치하에 있으면서 얼마나 우리 조부들이 일본인들로부터 설움을 당했는지 말해주고 있습니다. 그러나 일제 시에도 조선인들에게 존경받는 일본인들도 있었습니다. 1995년 12월 15일 일본인 마스토미 야스자에몬에게 국민훈장 모란장이 주어졌습니다. 국민훈장은 정치·경제·사회·교육·학술분야의 유공자에게 주어지는 훈장입니다. 대부분의 일본인들은 조선으로부터 농산물과 광물질등 한국에서 빼내어가기에 애를 쓰고 있었지만 그는 신실한 크리스천으로서 1910에서 1925년까지 우리나라에 있으며 자신의 재산을 들여서 간척사업을 하고 학교를 세워 교육사업에 앞장섰던 사람입니다. 당시 조선인들은 일본인들을 아주 미워하였지만 마스토미씨에 대한 태도는 달랐습니다. 그가 세운 고창 중학교를 졸업한 김옥성씨는 “마스토미 선생은 일본인이면서 한국을 사랑하고 한국사람을 사랑했다. 일본의 침략을 부끄럽게 생각하고 우리들에게 기독교의 사랑을 가르치며 교육과 종교를 통해 독립에의 꿈과 희망을 가지게 해 주셨다”고 기록합니다. 비록 적의 나라 사람이지만 존경받는 인물이었습니다. 오늘 본문에도 보면 유대인 장로들은 그들에게 회당을 지어준 백부장이 하나님의 은총을 받는 것이 합당하다고 극구 그를 추천합니다. 반면에 그 백부장은 자신은 하나님의 은총을 받을 자격이 없는 사람이라고 말하면서 예수님이 그의 집에 들어오시는 것조차 자신은 합당치 못한 사람이라고 자신을 낮춥니다. 이런 모습을 보시면서 예수님의 마음은 참으로 기뻤습니다. 오늘은 그들의 관계를 살펴보면서 우리도 그들과 같은 아름다운 관계를 유지할 수 있게 되기를 바랍니다. (본론) 하루는 유대인의 장로들이 예수님께 찾아와서 어떤 백부장의 죽어가고 있는 종을 고쳐달라는 부탁을 받았습니다. 참으로 기이한 일이었습니다. 보통 유대인 장로들은 로마인들을 매우 싫어합니다. 백부장은 유대인들을 지배하고 있는 로마의 군인입니다. 백부장은 유대인들의 적군 장교입니다. 백부장은 그들을 잡아가 곤장을 치게 하기도 하고, tax를 못 내면 그들을 옥에 잡아 가두기도 하고 악한 자들은 그들의 아낙네들을 강간도 하는 못된 자들이었습니다. 로마 장교들은 거룩한 성전에 Caesar의 흉상을 놓고 강제로 절하게 하는 로마의 군인들입니다. 그러니 유대인 장로들이 얼마나 백부장들을 싫어했겠습니까? 그런데 유대인들이 그런 백부장의 사랑하는 종을 고쳐달라고 그들이 친히 조르다니 해가 서쪽에서 떨 일이 아닙니까? 그들이 와서 하는 말이 “예수님, 그 사람은 정말 도와주셔야 합니다. 왜냐하면 그가 우리 유대인들을 사랑하고 우리 민족을 위해 회당을 지어주었습니다.” 자신들을 지배하고 있는 미워해야할 백부장을 유대인 장로들은 사랑해 주시라고 간청하는 것입니다. 그것도 입에 발린 말이 아니라 진심 어린 간언을 하는 것입니다. 그 백부장에게 감동을 먹고 그를 돕기 위해 예수님께로 나아와 부탁을 하는 것입니다. 이 얼마나 아름다운 모습입니까? 어떻게 그것이 가능했습니까? I. 먼저, 그 백부장은 인간을 귀중히 여기는 사람이었습니다. 로마인들은 당시 모든 나라를 지배하고 있는 민족이었습니다. 그렇기 때문에 그들에게는 수많은 종들이 그들의 집에 있었습니다. 그들에게 있어서 종 한 사람이란 그저 하나의 기계에 불과했습니다. 그들을 위한 동정이 없었습니다. 가라면 가야했고 오라면 와야 했습니다. 종은 인격이 없었습니다. 종은 죽여도 별 제재를 받지 않았습니다. 그러나 그 백부장은 달랐습니다. 그는 로마인이 아닌 종 한 사람 조차도 살리기 위해 최선을 다하는 사람을 귀하게 여기는 사람이었습니다. 몇 푼의 돈이면 살 수 있는 종의 병을 낫게 하기 위해 그는 백방 노력하는 그런 인물이었습니다. 일을 먼저 생각하는 사람이 아니라 사람을 먼저 생각하는 사람이었습니다. 무정한 로마 군인이 아니라 불쌍한 사람을 향해 시간과 물질을 솟아 부을 줄 아는 동정심이 있는 사람이었습니다. 대부분의 지배자들은 피지배국의 사람들을 업신여기는 사람들이 대부분입니다. 그러나 그 백부장은 함부로 대할 수 있는 종 한 사람도 귀하게 여기고 그를 위해 최선을 다하는 인간적인 너무나 인간적인 사람이었기 때문입니다. 그런 모습을 본 유대인들은 그 백부장으로부터 깊은 감명을 받았습니다. 사람이 사람을 귀하게 여길 줄 알아야 합니다. 이 땅 위에 거리마다 솟아져 나오는 것이 사람입니다. 사람이 이 온 지구를 덮고 있습니다. 사람이 안 사는 곳이 없습니다. 사막에 가도 그곳에 사람이 있고, 얼음으로 뒤덮힌 빙산에 가도 그곳에 사람이 삽니다. 그러니 사람이 얼마나 지천입니까? 그러다 보니 우리에게 있어서 사람이 그리 귀해 보이지 않습니다. 많은 사람들이 사람을 자신의 이익을 위해 이용해 먹고, 밑에 있는 사람을 우습게 여기고 함부로 말하곤 합니다. 백부장처럼 내 밑에서 일하고 있는 사람들을 귀한 사람으로 알고 잘 대우해 주어야 합니다. 일보다는 사람을 귀하여 여길 줄 아는 사람이 존경받을 사람입니다. 그런 사람은 적들조차도 그를 위해 간구하게 될 것입니다. 사람을 귀하게 여길 때 주님의 계명 즉 원수들이 친구로 변하게 되어 그들을 사랑할 수 있게 될 것입니다. II. 둘째, 유대인들이 그들의 원수인 백부장을 위해 간언을 하게 된 이유는 백부장이 유대인들에게 쌓아둔 덕이 많았기 때문입니다. 그 백부장은 자신들의 진급과 자신들의 이윤만 생각하고 사람들을 이용해 먹는 다른 백부장들과 많이 달랐습니다. 다른 백부장들은 그들이 식민지 나라에 배치 받아 거하는 동안 갖은 착취를 감행하여 돈을 긁어모았습니다. 그곳에 있는 동안 한 밑천 건져가야 로마에서 편하게 살 수 있었기 때문입니다. 외국에 있는 동안 이런 저런 귀중품들을 모아서 로마로 보내려면 그곳의 피지배 국민들의 피를 짜야했습니다. 대부분의 백부장들은 그렇게 해서 3년 동안 한 밑천 벌어 갔습니다. 그러나 그 백부장은 달랐습니다. 유대인들의 피를 짜내기는커녕 오히려 그는 유대인들을 위해 자신의 돈을 써서 회당까지 지어준 고마운 사람이었습니다. 그러니 어떻게 그를 미워할 수 있었겠습니까? 그들은 그 백부장이 자신들을 사랑한다는 믿었습니다. 우리를 사랑하는 자를 어찌 미워하겠습니까? 그는 종속국의 종교라고 해서 무시하지 아니하였습니다. 오히려 하나님을 두려워하고 그들이 신앙생활을 잘 할 수 있도록 도와주는 따스한 마음을 가진 사람이었기 때문에, 비록 악의에 차 있어야 할 유대인들도 그의 자비로 인하여 그렇게 그 사람에게 녹은 것입니다. 그 백부장이 부자여서 그들에게 회당을 지어주었다고 생각하십니까? 아닙니다. 그들을 위한 사랑이 회당을 짓게 하였습니다. 백부장은 그렇게 많은 돈을 벌 수 있는 높은 지위의 계급이 아닙니다. 그의 수하에 80-100명을 거느리는 지금의 중위 정도의 중대장에 불과합니다. 한 중대(century)는 8-10명으로 구성된 열 개의 소대(contubemium)로 되어 있었습니다. 그 위에 480명을 가지는 cohort와 두 cohort의 지휘자인 천부장(kiliarkos)과 7000명으로 구성된 legion이 있었습니다. 그러니 중위가 월급을 많이 받으면 얼마나 많이 받았겠습니까? 그는 잠시 유대에 머물 동안 돈을 벌어서 로마에 있는 아내와 자녀들에게 보내야 했습니다. 한 푼이라도 아껴야 했습니다. 그런 중에도 그는 꼬박꼬박 유대인들이 회당을 짓는데 돈을 썼던 것입니다. 그것을 지켜본 유대인들이 감동한 것입니다. 서로 사랑하는 사람을 위하여 쓰는 돈은 아깝지 않습니다. 서로 사랑하는 사람을 위한 고생은 힘들지 않습니다. III. 마지막으로, 유대인 장로들이 많은 해야할 일을 접어두고 그를 위해 이렇게 예수님 앞에 나아와 간구하는 것은 그 백부장의 남을 배려하는 마음에 감동을 받았기 때문입니다. 지배자들은 피지배자들의 문화를 무시하는 경우가 많습니다. 문명이 앞선 사람들은 문명이 낙후된 문화를 우습게 여기는 것을 많이 봅니다. 내 것만이 제일이라고 생각하기 때문에 그들은 피지배자들의 음식이나 문화에 관심을 전혀 갖지 않습니다. 그들의 생각에 관심이 없습니다. 그러나 그 백부장은 달랐습니다. 얼토당토 않은 유대인의 문화조차 무시하지 않고 존중해 줍니다. 유대인들은 그렇게 로마 사람들의 지배하에 있으면서도 얼어죽을 자존심이 있었습니다. 그것은 자신들은 신의 선택을 받은 선민이라는 우월감입니다. 유대인들은 로마인을 포함한 모든 이방인들을 개처럼 취급했습니다. 그렇기 때문에 그들의 집에 들어가지도 않았고, 로마인들이 자기들의 집에 들어오는 것도 금했습니다. 문명적으로 우월한 로마인들이 보기에 우스운 노릇입니다. 자기들이 그들을 개 취급해도 시원치 않은데 꾀제제한 유대인들이 오히려 자신들을 개 취급을 하려하니 말입니다. 백부장은 유대인이신 예수님께서 자신의 집에 들어오심으로 유대 사회에 이로인해 무리가 생기지 않게 배려하여 미리 그로 들어오시지 않게 하려고 미리 예수님께 전갈을 보내어 “주여 수고하지 마옵소서. 내 집에 들어오심을 나는 감당치 못하겠나이다 그러므로 내가 주께 나아가기도 감당치 못하겠나이다” 고 하였습니다. 이런 배려를 받으신 예수님은 정말 이런 사람이 또 있을까 싶었습니다. 그래서 곁에 있는 사람들에게 말씀하시기를 “내가 너희에게 이르노니 이스라엘 중에서도 이만한 믿음을 만나 보지 못하였노라”하고 그의 믿음을 칭찬하셨습니다. 싫어하는 사람의 어처구니 없는 태도 조차도 무시하지 않고 배려하고 선대해 주는 사람은 대단한 사람입니다. 이런 사람은 남에게 감동을 주고 주님의 마음을 움직일 수 있습니다. 주님을 감동케 한 이 백부장과 같은 여러분이 다 되시기 바랍니다. (결론) 한 떼의 유대인들이 몰려와서 그들이 미워해야할 백부장의 소원을 들어주시라고 예수님께 간언을 하는 것입니다. 그들은 그가 유대인들을 사랑하고 그들을 위해 회당을 지어주었기 때문에 그렇게 하는 것이 합당하다고 하였습니다. 그렇게라도 은혜를 갚고 싶어했습니다. 그 백부장은 자기는 예수님을 모실만큼 합당하지 않다고 극구 사양하는 미덕을 보였습니다. 다른 사람은 그가 합당하게 보고 자신은 그렇게 받기 합당하지 않다고 하는 이 모습을 보시고 예수님께서는 감동하셨습니다. 그 백부장처럼 사람을 귀중히 여기는 사람, 평상시에 덕을 쌓는 사람, 남을 배려할 줄 아는 사람, 남들은 높여 주는데 자신을 한 없이 낮아지는 사람이 되시어서 주님을 감동시키는 여러분이 다 되시기를 바랍니다.
